People + conservation = 30x30 target

Great article in Nature Reviews Biodiversity, Conservation practice must catch up with commitments to local people for 30x30 success (Feb, 2025).

Here's what I think we need for effective 30x30 outcomes, building on the call to action in this article:
⬆️$$ 1. compensate upfront for social costs to community of protected areas (PAs) with additional financing, not using finite poverty reduction funds
👣 2. measure outcomes for PEOPLE and use locally relevant info, not just hectares
🌏 3. continue to boost Indigenous peoples rights and listen as they advance their own agendas - learn from bright spots in Latin America, Canada and Australia
🦋 4. embrace more new financing for PAs, e.g. from debt reductions and nature credits
🏘️ 5. recognise the colonial impact of outdated fortress conservation, and let's move to community-managed 'other effective area-based conservation measures' to meet 30x30 commitments
🗣️ 6. FPIC is essential but just the start - it needs to be operationalised, recurrent and inclusive

Have a read of this important article, and I hope it gives todays 'to do' list a turbo-boost!
